External Authors: Adding an External Author (TNC Biography Detail Page Template)

How to add an external author in AEM by creating a biography page fragment

Step 1)     Create a new Bio Page in the Our People section and in the Name field, enter “External – First Last” (E.g. John Smith - External)

Step 2)     Complete page properties in Bio Detail Tab and designate author as External

Step 3)     Publish Page

When you build an article page on nature.org, you have the option to include an author byline and author component on the page if the article author has a bio in the system. The author component displays information about the author at the top and bottom of the page and is created and authored in the page properties when you add an author and choose not to hide the author component.

What if your author is not a staff or board member with a bio page?

You can still add an author (and author component) to your article page in page properties – and it is recommended that you do. In order to have this functionality, you will first need to create a bio page fragment for the external author by creating a new bio page and designating the author as “external”. This will not create a live page on nature.org.

Step 1) Create a New Bio Page

Following the steps you would take to create an typical biography page on nature.org, create a new bio page as a child page to the Our People aggregation page.

In the Sites console, navigate to and highlight the Our People page and click the blue Create button and select Page to open the page wizard.

Select the TNC Biography Detail Page Template and complete the required fields (Title, Page Title and Description). Make the Title and Page Title the name of the external author as you would want it to display. Create the new page and open the page in edit mode.

Step 2) Complete the Page Properties

In the page properties, complete the following fields:

  • Name field (Basic Tab): E.g. John Smith - External
    • This field is internal facing only, it will show in AEM when navigating through sections and you will see it in the drop down when selecting an author in page properties of an article page. Label your page external by using the naming convention: [First] [Last] - External
  • Owner or Business Group field (Basic Tab): E.g. Magazine
    • Select your business group
  • Content Type field (Biography Detail Tab): Biography
    • Select “Biography” (Biography should be the default value)
  • Bio Job Title, Region field (Biography Detail Tab): E.g. Freelance Writer
    • Enter the job title of your external author
  • Select Author Type field (Biography Detail Tab): External
    • When you select “External” for author type, this is where you are telling the system that you are not creating a live page on nature.org. This will also make certain previously required fields optional.
  • Bio Headshot field (Biography Detail Tab) E.g., /content/dam/tnc/nature/en/photos/Smith_Bio.jpg
    • If you include a headshot it will show in the author component at the top left of the page, beneath the hero and byline. Use the relative URL for a published photo in the DAM.
  • Bio Short Description field (Biography Detail Tab)
    • This is the description that will show in the author component on a published article. Make sure the short description is written exactly as you would like it to display on a live page.
  • Bio First Name field (Biography Detail Tab): E.g. Brendan
    • Enter the first name of the external author
  • Bio Last Name field (Biography Detail Tab): E.g. Borrell
    • Enter the last name of the external author

Step 3) Publish

As with any page or asset on AEM, the bio page will need to be published

  • Save and close the page properties
  • In page options menu, select “Start Workflow” and place the page into workflow as you would normally.
  • In the workflow title note that you are publishing an external author bio page.

After following these steps, the name of your external author will appear in the dropdown list of authors when you add an author to the page properties of an article.
